Register for Fabrangen Community Service/Social Action

Fabrangen will participate as a group in the annual DC JCC December 25 Day of Service. This will be a terrific event, and a really good one for children and families.

Father McKennaWe will be helping out at the Father McKenna Center. The Father McKenna Center serves the needs of poor, men, women and children through a variety of programs, such as the Men’s Drop-In Center, drug and alcohol counseling, and feeding the hungry. During the winter months they provide a hypothermia unit and hot meals for the homeless.

Volunteers will prepare and serve breakfast, clean-up, then begin to prepare lunch.  Some volunteers will help prepare food bags.  Volunteers will also have an opportunity to interact with the clients.

We have "reserved" this volunteer project for Fabrangen so we are counting on good participation.

The Father McKenna Center is located in the basement of Saint Aloysius Catholic Church on the campus of Gonzaga College High School. The address is 19 Eye Street NW in Washington, DC, right off North Capitol St. The closest METRO stop is Union Station.

This is a fabulous volunteer opportunity, as we take over most of the work from the regular staff who are able to celebrate Christmas with their families. The place has an atmosphere of respect and dignity.

    There are two shifts: 7:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m and 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

To register, go to http://thejdc.convio.net/site/Calendar/1962541781?view=Detail&id=130763&s_promoCode=Fabrangen On the DCJCC "Food Prep" volunteer site, click "BUY TICKETS." You will then see the registration form, with two shifts at Father McKenna Center. Complete the registration (be sure to scroll down). There is a $15 tax-deductible fee, which goes to pay the DC JCC staff and other costs related to their Community Service program. Fabrangen will subsidize this fee if the fee presents a problem. Here's the registration link:

Please also send an e-mail to Debbie Goldman dgoldman@cwa-union.org or Lloyd Wolf wwwolf@erols.com to let us know you have registered. Feel free to contact Debbie with any questions.

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service: January 16th, 2012
Last year DC JCC worked at Spingarn High School to commemorate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Over 150 volunteers brightened the walls of Spingarn's school on this Day of Service.  We made a day OFF mean something! Watch for 2012 project details.

  • Spring into Action
Volunteers assist different community organizations in the Greater DC area during this great environmental-action day of service. We planted seedlings, built sheds, refurbished school gardens, and enjoyed the great weather all while bettering and beautifying our local environment.

This year Spring into Action will be replaced with Good Deeds Day. We're very excited for this community-wide Jewish volunteer day. Israeli's will be hosting a Good Deeds Day also...very cool.

To volunteer, please contact

Make a New Year's resolution to join us for these important social justice activities.
