Selling
Your Chametz
Thanks to David Schneyer
If
you haven't already made arrangements, David Shneyer will be pleased
to make arrangements for purchase of your chametz for Pesach. Contact
him today or Sunday, preferably today, at Am Kolel (15 W Montgomery
Avenue, Rockville, MD.) Either call (301 309-2310) and leave a message,
or
email him directly (amkolel@aol.com)
Feel free to use the authorization, below, if you cut, paste and email
your request. Please be sure to reach him, however. He may take another
approach.
Selling Your Chametz: 5764
Jewish law requires that we own no chametz at all during Pesach. To
insure compliance with this halacha, we may transfer title of whatever
chametz we have to a person who is not Jewish. Thus, legally, the
chametz is not ours during Pesach. (This applies to people going
out of town as well. If you will be away from your home 30 days
or more before Pesach and including Pesach, there's no need to
do Bedikat Chametz, just sell the contents.) As he did last year,
David will perform the transfer ceremony, called
Mechirat Chametz, literally the Selling of Chametz. He will collect
all the authorizations and transfer the chametz to a non-Jew. Following
Pesach,
the non-Jew will return the authorizations to him so that possession
reverts back to the owner. Everyone must arrange for the sale of chametz
and vessels used for chametz before Pesach for his or her own household.
In connection with the sale, fill in the form below authorizing Reb
David to sell your chametz. The sale must be completed by 8:00 a.m.
on the morning before the first Seder; therefore the form needs to be
no later than Sunday, April 4.
This
year we again invite you to contribute some amount, any amount (no
amount is too small) to buy back your chametz. This money will go to
Am Kolel. This, too, is a mitzvah! If you submit a form, your chametz
will
be included in the sale whether or not you send an amount for re-purchasing.
Send
your forms and checks or cash directly to David Shneyer. If writing
a check, please make it payable to Am Kolel. Write "Chametz
Tzedakah" in
the memo section of your check.
