Fabrangeners in PrintShalshelet

Shalshelet - The Foundation for New Jewish Liturgical Music seeks to foster the creation of original music for Jewish congregational use and expose wider audiences to innovations in Jewish religious music. In composing new music for the liturgy, we participate in the chain of tradition that honors the role of music in interpreting sacred text.

Shalshelet’s annual Festival of New Jewish Liturgical Music and related educational workshops, songbooks, and CDs serve as the primary vehicles for sharing new musical compositions with individuals and congregations across the nation and around the world.

Jews United for Justice

Jews United for Justice (JUFJ) was created in April, 1998, by a small group of Jews in the greater Washington, DC area. Drawing on a tradition of Jewish commitment to justice and the talents and dedication of our growing membership, JUFJ is an exciting community-based organization that seeks to repair the world by concentrating on issues of local concern.

Jewish Federation of Greater Washington

The Jewish Federation is the community-building voice of the Jewish community in and around our nation’s capital since 1925. Today, it serves the needs of approximately 268,000 people (110,000 Jewish households), spanning a 1,500 square-mile area that includes the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia. The Federation provides or funds many useful services to the community, including an extensive online community
calendar and the Jewish Information and Referral Service.

The Craftmanship of Shirley Waxman, Contemporary Fabric Artist

Shirley has made Memorial Quiltseveral ritual objects for Fabrangen and members of Fabrangen. She designed our Memorial Quilt, a project initiated some years ago by Sheryl Segal. Shirley was joined in the sewing, embroidering, and quilting by Sheryl and a number of other Fabrangeners. The design features an Etz Chayim--Tree of Life-- and leaves, each bearing the embroidered name of a deceased person, are sewn to the branches of the tree. Members of Fabrangen are currently working on embroidering additional leaves for the Memorial Quilt.

Shirley was recently commissioned to design a new table covering for the large "leaders" table at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church that Fabrangen uses at High Holidays. A number of Fabrangeners are collaborating on the embroidery for the inscription of this table cover. Shirley will piece it together into a finished work.
