Ethan Merlin and family Purim 5777Start Time – 6:30 p.m.

  • 15th St Presbyterian Church building, 15th & R NW
  • Parking in the church’s lot is limited; consider getting there by bike, bus, or Metro
    • Within walking distance of Dupont Circle and U Street Metro, buses on 14th Street and 16th Street
  • Please come in costume for a whimsical maariv (evening) service, followed by a full Hebrew chanting of Megillat Esther, mishloach manot (goodie bag) exchange, and opportunities for tzedakah (righteous giving) to the organizations that have spoken at TLS since last Purim.
  • This gathering will include hamantaschen (Purim pastries) and snacks but NOT a full meal.

6:20 p.m. – Doors open

Purim party! Balloon animals, temporary tattoos, face painting, etc.

7:00 p.m. — Costume Contest!

Prizes for age 12 & up and 12 & under, plus some sort of sticker for every participant; prizes for best individual and for best group costumes.

7:20 p.m. – Maariv

7:40 p.m. – Shpiel written by Laurie Krieger and performed by Helen Hayes-nominated actor Sasha Olinick

8:02 p.m. – Megillah reading and our famous joke slide show

Feel free to bring:

  • Two or more “mishloach manot”  baskets (Purim GOODIE BAGS) to exchange with others

    • Traditionally folks each give at least two such goody bags on Purim, each containing at least two different ready-to-eat food treats. Our mishloach manot swap, like our potluck dinners, will be a two-table affair, with one table for vegetarian goodie bags and another for vegetarian goodie bags whose contents also carry a hekhsher, or kosher certification.

  • Creative noisemakers (especially BOXES OF RICE or PASTA to shake or food cans that can be banged upon with spoons) which will be donated afterwards to Capital Area Food Bank

  • CHECKBOOK/CASH to make an in-person donation as part of “matanot la’evyonim” (Purim tradition of giving funds to fight poverty) to organizations that have given divrei tikkun (presentations) at TLS

  • DRINKS to share if your last name begins with A-K; SNACKS to share if your last name begins with L-Z.

  • FIFTY CENTS or more in cash to donate as part of “mahatzit haShekel”  (Purim tradition of donating half of one unit of the local currency).

Plan now to spontaneously but inobtrusively liven up the Megillah reading with sound effects, visual gags, and other SCHTICK!
