May their memories be for a blessing . . .

Francisco Altschul
August 10, 2023

Lifelong activist for social justice in El Salvador. Exiled, he represented the coalition fighting to replace El Salvador’s rightwing government. He found allies, made friends, worked across political lines in Washington. Later, he was twice the left-of-center government’s U.S. ambassador. Francisco had political commitment, great loyalty, and tremendous personal integrity.

Julia Deutsch
December 5, 2022

My mother lived 98 full years, most in New York City. She outlived my father by 7 months, not to be parted for long. Born in Debrecen, Hungary, survived Auschwitz but lost her family, met my father and opened a dress store in NY. She loved art, cooking, and meeting new people. My friends were her friends and we were all so sad to see her go.

Heitzi Epstein
September 19, 2023

Our friend Heitzi never lost her passion for family, friendship and creativity during a life beset by illness. Trained as a lawyer, she eventually turned to art and teaching. Her rabbi eulogized, “When life handed her lemons, she made ceramics!” Heitzi was a true friend to all, and all – including her book group of 30+ years – miss her greatly.

Selma Harris Forstater
February 9, 2023

My mom, Selma Harris Forstater, was a proud life-long Philadelphian, a volunteer at the National Museum of Jewish History, a heartfelt Jew, and a lover of museums, music, Yiddishkeit, and family. She always enjoyed coming to the DMV for visits with her children and grandchildren who lived here.

Ann Forstater

Yoelith (Yola) Frank
November 21, 2022

Yoelith Frank was born 8-26-36 in Tel-Aviv, Israel. She was my beloved wife, companion, and partner for 61 years, and beloved mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren. She was talented in quilting, sewing and knitting. Yola is terribly missed by me and her family and friends. May her memory always be a blessing.

Jacob Frank

My mother passed away suddenly on November 21, 2022. She loved her family unconditionally and always enjoyed being with them, especially her grandchildren. She will be missed always. “‘How do you spell ‘love?’ – Piglet ‘You don’t spell it . . . you feel it.’ – Pooh” (A.A. Milne)

Adam Frank

Goldie Garber
February 12, 2023

My aunt Goldie was born in 1937 Germany. She spent the war years in Belgium, raised by a Catholic family. Reunited with her parents, she emigrated to the US at age 12, married my uncle, raised two children, and was a beloved kindergarten principal and arts counselor at a sleepaway camp. At the time of death, she counted 24 great-grandchildren.

Larry Garber

Daniel Goldberg
August 31, 2023

Devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Nancy E. Roth

Harold “Doc” Gorvine
November 8, 2022

Doc taught history and Jewish Studies at Akiba Hebrew Academy for 41 years. He and beloved Natalie had 2 sons and grandchildren. Creative and enthusiastic teacher. Adored by students, synagogue members and havurah institute friends. Most common student tribute – he had taught them critical thinking. Examples: Jake Tapper, PA Gov. Josh Shapiro

Sheira (Cheryl) Greenwald
before Passover, 2023

Sheira was a Fabrangen member during her college years. I knew her and her loving husband, Elihu Davison, from our early Weiss’ Farm and other havurah retreats era. Always a sweet nature and soft smile, Sheira managed to endure the long-term trials of M.S. with grace. Pneumonia took her and she was buried in Jerusalem.

Joyce Gurevich-Uvena
September 9 or 10, 2023

Joyce was a dear person and near-neighbor who readily befriended me a year ago, when I moved to Capitol Hill, her home for nearly 50 years. She radiated enthusiasm for life and optimism. These were sorely tested recently by health problems, painful losses and dilemmas, but she never lost hope. I miss her.

Arlene Levinson

Gary Herman
August 29, 2023

Our first first cousin. Suddenly. Distantly, in Michigan. But not alone and close in our hearts. As we read in the Haftarah on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, “Weeping they shall come; and with compassion I will guide them. I will bring them to streams of water, on a smooth path, where they shall not stumble.” May his memory be a blessing.

Gwen Rubinstein

Dr. Joel J. Hertz
December 24, 2022

More brother than cousin, son than nephew, Joel saw the world in its richness and complexity, bringing his insights and kindness to the world, writ large and small – contributing to its betterment. May his memory truly be for a blessing.

Mindy Reiser

Grace Horowitz
30 Kislev 5783

Former Fabrangener Grace Horowitz moved to a cooperative housing community in New York, but reached out to a few Fabrangeners when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year. Among her contributions to Fabrangen was devotedly coordinating and taking good care of Warren Glick when he died of cancer decades ago.

Bernardo Kalb
January 8, 2023

In loving memory of my centenarian father, Bernardo Kalb, Binyamin ben Bluma v’Dovid Melech, z”l. He loved the color orange. He was bursting with life. Creativity flowed through him, onto the page, into the spoken word. He loved us so much, and we loved him. All that he gave us so lovingly and freely, most importantly the love of life and family, lives deeply in our souls. We love you, Bernardo.

Sarinah Kalb

Daniel Lang
November 7, 2022

Beloved father, grandfather, brother and son, Dan Lang filled 96 years with activities that gave him satisfaction. An internist and health quality expert in Los Angeles for over 50 years, Dad enthusiastically shared with our family and others his great pleasure in science and learning, reading and writing poetry, walking in nature, and creating a Jewish community.

Lisa Lang and Jon, Isabel and Charlotte (Nelson Pecora) Bush

Bev LaRue
August 8, 2023

Bev was my first cousin. Born on September 8, 1947, she was the eldest of my father’s brother’s four children, and the link uniting the New Jersey LaRues (my roots) with the California LaRues. A teacher and tutor in greater San Diego, she became a seal/whale spotter and educator during summers in Oregon. Bev knew how to listen, share, and reach.

Rick LaRue

Rabbi Jeffrey Marker (HaRav Yisrael Yaakov Mordechai ben Yosef v’Chana)
February 26, 2023 – 5 Adar 5783

Rabbi Jeffrey Marker (and spouse Paula Freedman) enlivened Fabrangen in the 1970s before leaving to attend rabbinical school in California, Israel, and New York. Jeff always followed the Grateful Dead. From their home in Brooklyn, Rabbi Jeff relentlessly pursued Tikkun Olam and social justice, and worked as a hospital chaplain.

Rose Sue Berstein

David S. Meyers
July 2, 2023

David was my true love and partner for thirty years. We raised our beautiful son Abe together, celebrated our community together, and mourned together when we faced hard times. He was dedicated to making the world healthier and more just for all. This summer, he died of glioblastoma at the age of fifty-four.

Hannah Joyner

Albert Miller
August 24, 2023

Our cousin Al, born in Berlin 100+ years ago, was a Holocaust refugee who became a Ritchie Boy in the Army and later an optometrist near Cincinnati, where he lived with his beloved wife of almost 70 years and three sons. He lectured widely and passionately about the Holocaust until early this year, and was also an avid power-walker and tennis player.

Jon Bush and Lisa Lang

Linda Pastan
January 30, 2023

“Poet who plumbed the ordinary,” said the New York Times obituary. Only life, death, and beauty. A local poet whose economical but powerful words regularly served our services. “I would settle now for just one perfect day anywhere at all, a day without mosquitoes, or traffic or newspapers with their headlines.”

Gwen Rubinstein and David Goldston

Sari Rovinsky
November 27, 2022

My niece was a vibrant 30 year old writing tutor with a larger than life personality.

Renana Brooks

Dorothy Somer (Devorah bat Yehoshua v’Chana Leah)
April 18, 2023

Beloved mother of Lawrence Somer, Robert Somer, and Stuart Somer, devoted grandmother of Jesse Somer, Julia Somer Libretto, and Nathan Somer.

Larry Somer

Howard Spodek, PhD
August 10, 2023

Pittsburgh roots, committed Jew, he helped raise three children in Philadelphia and taught world history at Temple University for decades. Authored history textbook. Constantly returning to Ahmedabad, he lectured there and became the historian of his beloved Indian city. Always gracious and outgoing, he left countless friends and colleagues worldwide.

Kay Flick Elfant

Peter Vermes
September 2, 2023

My cousin Peter was the child of my father’s oldest sister, lost in the Shoah. Raised by grandparents, he lived in the same apartment in Budapest for most of 87 years, becoming an engineer developing printing technology. I loved his wry wit and sharp intellect. Visits to Hungary were marked by many espressos, which made for lively conversation!
