Tisha B’Av, the ninth day of the month of Av, commemorates the destruction of the two Temples in Jerusalem, as well as many other calamities that have befallen the Jewish people. Eicha, the Book of Lamentations, is read every year in a setting reminiscent of sitting shiva, along with a short service and the singing of kinot, or elegies, sad songs about our misfortunes over time.
